More and more people are living and working abroad

Every year, between 0.6 and 1.6 per cent of the German population leave their home country. In 2025, just under 296,000 people moved abroad – 26,000 more Germans than in the previous year, and the trend is rising. However, moving away from one’s home country is not just a German phenomenon, but a global one: as of 2024, 304 million people worldwide were living in countries where they were not born.
