These are the best cities for vegan foodies in Germany and Europe

For more and more people in Germany, it is becoming common to eat vegan, i.e. to do without animal products in their diet and consumption. At least 1.5 million vegans live in Germany. For this year's Veganuary, the online travel agency weloveholidays compared more than twenty German and European cities with a vegan menu.

The trend towards vegan cooking has also arrived in the catering industry. To the delight of many experimental vegans, more and more restaurants are venturing into vegan menus. The trend is also impressive in economic terms: in 2020, global sales of dairy and meat substitutes totalled over 29 billion US dollars. This figure is set to rise to an impressive 162 billion US dollars by 2030.</p

These are the best European cities for vegans

1. London

Multicultural London is undoubtedly the vegan hotspot of Europe. The British capital is home to three major vegan festivals and almost 200 vegan restaurants - including three with the coveted green Michelin star: Silo in Stratford, Oxo Tower Brasserie and Petersham Nurseries Café. Silo is not only characterised by a predominantly vegan menu, but has also been recognised as the world's first zero-waste restaurant. From the plates to the furniture, everything is made from recycled materials.</p

Highly rated restaurants include Gauthier Soho with the finest French vegan cuisine and Holy Carrot in Knightsbridge with a plant-based menu full of unconventional but delicious bites.

2. Paris

Paris, known for its culinary influence on French and international cuisine, has not accidentally taken the lead in exploring the possibilities of plant-based eating. The French metropolis has six restaurants with a green Michelin star - twice as many as in London! All of these restaurants are also awarded a traditional Michelin star, so it is advisable to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. It's worth getting a table at Arpège, Alain Passard's brilliant three Michelin-starred restaurant, which has been wowing diners with an all-vegetarian menu since 2001.

In Paris, locals and tourists alike can experience the diversity of three vegan festivals, including the SMMMILE festival in the Parc de la Villette, which is considered the largest vegan festival in Europe.

3. Berlin

Berlin is the third best city in Europe for vegans. Voted the vegan capital of Europe by the Vegetarian Times, Berlin impresses with the most restaurants with a green Michelin star. There are seven in total across the city, ranging from modern, upscale cuisine to creative, vegan gastronomy. Rutz on Chausseestraße, which has been awarded three Michelin stars and one green star, is definitely worth a visit - if you can get a table, whether vegan or not!
