BDAE's Christmas donation goes to refugees in need in East Africa
This year, for Christmas, the BDAE group has chosen to donate money in support of the people in East Africa.
This year, BDAE has chosen to donate money in support of the people in East Africa.
For over 40 years, the region known as the Horn of Africa has been suffering from a severe drought with four back-to-back failed rainy seasons. Because of this devastative drought brought on by climate change the water sources have dried up, the crops have withered, and a lot of the livestock have perished. As a result, people have lost their livelihoods are no longer able to support themselves.
Access to water has also become very limited: 4.4 million people in Ethiopia do not have adequate access to water in the face of worsening drought.
Indeed, in the region, 29 per cent of water wells and 34 per cent of hand-dug wells are dry or have extremely low water levels. As a result, humanitarian organisations are having to resort to costly water transports, exacerbated by the very high temperatures of the recent months.
Hardly any access to clean water
Refugees and internally displaced persons are particularly affected by this crisis. Millions of people do not have sufficient access to water. They can’t drink, cook, or clean and are therefore forced to flee their homes. They travel long distances and, due to the scarcity of the water supplies in many places, they must fetch water from puddles laden with potentially deadly pathogens.
The BDAE Group’s donation is funding a comprehensive emergency kit including cooking, hygiene, and bedding items for many affected families in East Africa. "The BDAE Group has always supported people who, for a variety of reasons, choose to go abroad. But far too many people in the world must leave their homes against their will because of wars and ongoing life-threatening crisis" says BDAE CEO Philipp Belau.
How to help?
Those who wish to donate to this cause, or to any projects supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are welcome to find more information about the organisation on their official global website here.
BDAE made its donation to the German national partner of the UNHCR, the UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe (website in German). This organization has been supporting refugee programmes worldwide since 1980 and always acts seriously and efficiently in the use of its donations. It is certified by the donation label of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI).
